Dear odonatologists,

Following the previous Early Announcement, GIO invites you to fill your registration form and inscribe you to ECOO 2024. See below for a reminder: the congress will take place in Sevilla from 25th to 28th of june.

The Congress Field Trip will explore Sierra de Grazalema and a few extra localities such as Guadalete river, Los Tollos lagoon and the Guadalquivir.

Additionaly, a five days Post-Congress Field Trip will allow us to visit Serranía de Ronda’s best rivers (Hozgarganta, Guadiaro, Genal) and chase rarities in our way back to Sevilla.

Two special sessions of the congress:

  • Impact of Climate change on Odonata and conservation responses
  • Ecology and adaptation of Mediterranean dragonflies

Post congress field trip

A summary of Andalusian dragonflies.

This tour will focus on exploring the best Western Andalusian rivers : Guadiaro water catchment with wild Hozgarganta and Genal rivers, located in Serranía de Ronda and Straigh of Gibraltar area.

This trip will be loosely based on the Dragonfly tour and we will based in the lovely white village of Benarrabá. This area in much cooler than Sevilla.

Programme

DAY 1. Saturday 29th of June: Transfert. Brazo del Este. Doñana polders and Guadalquivir channel. Guadalete river: for Onychogomphus costae, Platycnemis latipes, Trithemis species, etc. Small dam in Grazalema Natural Park for still water species. We will fiish with a short visit of Ronda.

DAY 2. Sunday 30th: Genal river. Little driving involved during this day. Visit of the most remote and beautiful river stretch. Boyeria irene, Orthetrum chrysostigma, Oxygastra curtisii and Onynchogomphus uncatus will be present. Swimming pool at the hotel.

DAY 3. Monday 1st of July: Hozgarganta river. The last Mediterranean wild river in southern Spain. Best Macromia site, but we are already a little late in the season. Gomphids, Platycnemis acutipennis, etc. Late afternoon at the Straight of Gibraltar if we are in the mood of sea sighting.

DAY 4. Tuesday 2nd: Guadiaro river. Permanent river with nice water flow… Zygonyxtorridus and many other Mediterranean river specialists, most gomphids are possible.

DAY 5. Wednesday 3rd: Transfer day. Málaga localities chasing rare species (lets keep the surprises). Late arrival at the hotel in Sevilla.

Prices

The first option is to be hosted at our village’ s rural hotel, including dinner at the restaurant.

  • Sharing a double room. Final price: 700 euros / pax.
  • Supplement for single room. Final price: 850 euros / pax.

Second option “Camp Crusty”. You have the possibility to use the Field Station as a campsite (with a large hall for sleeping, shower and small kitchen for cooking).

  • Campsite final price: 400 euros / pax.

Grant scheme: We will probably be able to afford one or two grants for the camp siters.

Early announcement

Dear odonatologists,

The Iberian Group of Odonatology (Grupo Ibérico de Odonatología – GIO) is happy to announce the seventh European Congress of Odonatology (ECOO 2024) will be held in Sevilla (Andalusia) during the last week of June (25th – 28th) in the historical building of Casa de la Ciencia in collaboration with Doñana Biological Station / Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Save the dates in your calendar. A post-congress field trip will explore the best Andalusian rivers near Ronda in search of SW Paleartic endemics and African ‘new comers’.

We will soon post more information and contents on ECOO’s website: ecoo24.wordpress.com and open the registration form in the following announcement.

We also want to highlight the congress will allow you to know first-hand the situation of dragonflies in the famous Doñana National Park and to know the story of the recently described Onychogomphus cazuma. In addition to the usual sessions, the programme will open two special sessions of the congress:

  • Impact of Climate change on Odonata and conservation responses
  • Ecology and adaptation of Mediterranean dragonflies

ECOO24 will be held in Andalusia

As announced in Slovenia, the Iberian Group of Odonatology, Grupo Ibérico de Odonatología (GIO), will hold next ECOO in southern Spain (Andalusia).

The Spanish team greets Slovenia’s organization for their excellent congress, and is already working on making 2024’s meeting a well-rounded event. Please contact Florent Prunier for inquiries.

ECOO 2022 has ended

The sixth European Congress on Odontology (ECOO 2022), held from 26th to 30th June in city Kamnik, Slovenia, has ended. It embraced 44 oral presentations and 14 poster presentations with published abstracts in the ECOO 2022 Abstract book. Altogether, 74 odonatologist or other nature enthusiasts participated at the ECOO 2022. Participants came from 25 countries from Europe and around the world – Albania, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Slovenia.

Grants to participate at the ECOO 2022 were given to 15 participants due to the help of the supporters. With their help also a few awards for young scientists were given by the ECOO (best poster award and best presentation awards). Best poster awards, selected by the ECOO participants, for young scientists were given to Eva Bilkova and Olena Kushnirenko et al. Awards for best oral presentation by young scientist, selected by the Scientific Committee, were given to Floris van Geest & Wouter van Der Voort, Loan Arguel, Cecilia Díaz-Martínez, Vanessa Amaya-Vallejo and Sara Schloemer.

The one-day mid-congress field trip was made to Ljubljansko barje Nature Park, where 37 odonate species were recorded (report is here). After the congress, a 6-full day post-congress field trip was also organized at which participants observed 51 odonate species altogether (report in is preparation).

The 6th European Congress on Odonatology was organised by the Slovene Dragonfly Society (in Slovene language Slovensko odonatološko društvo), a voluntary NGO focusing on the conservation of the dragonfly fauna and its habitats in Slovenia.

The congress has just started and we would like to show you the official logo of this year’s European Congress on Odonatology! The logo symbolizes the place and the country where the sixth in the row of European gatherings dedicated to exchange and spread of knowledge on Western Palearctic Odonata is going on. The main part of the logo is Somatochlora meridionalis, a species for which Slovenia is definitely the best place in Europe to see!

At the moment we are inviting you to check the program where all the lectures are published.

Only a few days left

There is only a few days left to ECOO 2022, where more than 70 odonatologist from 25 countries will meet at the sixth in the row of European gatherings dedicated to exchange and spread of knowledge on Western Palearctic Odonata. Welcome!

A very interesting, although full, program is already published.

Sunday’s program

On Sunday, from 15.00 to 18.00, we will have early registration at the Mekinje Monastery for participants to check-in at the congress. There you will receive basic information about the ECOO, congress materials etc. Later on you are invited to join us at the Monastery, where members of the Slovene Dragonfly Society will prepare some small snacks and be available for chats until 21.00.

There is also guided tour around and about Kamnik (= hosting town) provided on Sunday. The tour is planned to start at 18.00 in the city centre (about 15 minutes by foot from the Monastery or 8 min from B&B Pod skalo). It lasts up to 2 hours.

For those arriving after early registration, you can register to the congress on Monday, from 8.00 to 10.00 at the Monastery, where the official program will happen during the congress.

Check-in at the accommodation

Those staying at the Mekinje Monastery can check-in to their room/bed on Sunday from 12.00 on. Those staying at the B&B Pod skalo can do the check-in from 16.00 to 21.30.

Overview of participation

We have received confirmation of participation of 75 participants coming from Albania, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom and even Australia, Colombia and India. Altogether 43 oral and 14 poster presentations are planned.

A detailed program will be presented late next week. In general, the Congress will embrace 3 days of presentations (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) and a mid-congress field trip (Wednesday). The official opening of the Congress will be on the morning of June 27th and the closing will be on the evening of the 30th. The participants are invited to arrive on June 26th and depart on July 1st.
